Geoscience Australia’s Digital Earth Australia (DEA) is a platform that uses over 30 years of spatial data and images recorded by satellites orbiting our planet to detect physical changes across Australia in unprecedented detail. DEA organises these enormous volumes of freely available satellite data in to time-stamped observations, and prepares it for analysis by removing ‘noise’ such as cloud cover, atmospheric conditions, and shadows. Our design highlights the immense value this archive holds in recording changes to Australia’s surface over time. We think of the archive as a stack of data layers that are built up over time, as the satellite collects more pixels of information.
