THE SCIENCE
STEPHEN SARRE
University of Canberra, Professor of Wildlife Genetics
Tympos are lizards that have become endangered by the loss of natural grasslands but which are now facing a new threat from climate change. What our research has shown is that as Canberra gets warmer, then so do the grasslands in which the dragons live forcing the lizards to spend more time in their burrows. The trouble is, that when the lizards are in the burrows, they are not out and about doing the things that lizards do (like foraging and eating and reproducing) but they are still spending energy. If Canberra temperatures get too hot for too many days in row (as is happening) then we will reach the point where Tympos will not be able to forage enough to sustain themselves and will face extinction.

THE ART
BROOKE McEACHERN
ANU School of Art and Design
Combining pen and paper with digital graphics, much like this project’s collaboration of art and science, Brooke’s design draws awareness to the conditions of the Tympos within their burrows of Canberra grasslands. Humour plays a fundamental role in this illustration in order to start conversation about conservation.
