Team Firestorm outlines an exploration into how the heat from a bushfire may trigger a thunderstorm or firestorm. Currently these firestorms are impossible to control and there is not any methods to predict them.

Rachel is an atmospheric scientist and is researching bushfires. Using a numerical model and a supercomputer, she is investigating how the heat from a bushfire may trigger a thunderstorm, also known as pyrocumulonimbus, or a firestorm. Firestorms are the most dangerous manifestation of a bushfire and impossible to control, and as yet, there are no operational methods to predict such an event. Specifically, Rachel is investigating how the shape of a fire influences the likelihood of a firestorm developing. This research will help to forecast such devastating events.

Through an alternative take on botanical illustration Michelle has attempted to capture Joe’s fascination with proteins. By incorporating elements of machinery into the organic forms she illustrates Joe’s perception of proteins as moving and behaving like machinery – like a living factory. The botanical illustration style reminds us that today’s exploration into the micro world continues to be as wild and wondrous as when explorers sailed around the world to discover new life. There is so much still to explore and discover.
