THE SCIENCE | DIPON SAKAR

Dipon is a food microbiologist and researches the growth of microbes in a cheese called paneer. The good microbes help make the cheese from milk, but the bad microbes, such as Listeria monocytogenes, can grow in the cheese if it was not made properly or not stored at the correct temperature and they can ultimately make you sick.

Microbial interactions and communities are diverse and essential to our world! From our foods to our homes and the nature surrounding us, we are constantly interacting with microbes. We live in a in a harmonious balance which is essential to our health and well-being. It is important to understand this balance, as when it is disrupted, chaos ensues in the form of, disease and allergies.

The shirt design created by Paula embodies the balance of microbes across our community, using bright colours, saturated effects and gestural strokes, dots and intricate lines, to bring forth the concept of 'generative life'.

The wide variety of microbes and their ubiquitous nature is illuminated throughout the shirt design, with many different microbial forms depicted, including Listeria monocytogenes. Each form is uniquely constructed, growing and expanding, a visual translation of the microbial growth curve.

Paula drew important parallels between the growth, diversity and community of the microbes and our very own existence as humans. Her design identifies a symbiotic relationship between all organic matter, the harmonious balance across microbial communities is much like the balance we as humans rely on in-order to flourish and evolve.

  • OUR SHIRTS

    We produce high quality shirts so you can wear them everyday and spark all of those science-ey conversations.

    Our shirts are made from a mid weight, 180 GSM, 100% combed cotton (aka a great shirt). They are also preshrunk to minimise shrinkage (phew).

    Shirts are sourced through AS Colour as they have high quality products and transparent ethical processes, see here.

    To minimise our enviromental impact our shirts are printed on demand with water-based inks and are shipped in home-compostable packaging (yay compost!).

    All shirts are printed and shipped from Melbourne within 14 days of ordering.

    Everywhere else: $20

    You can return your shirt up to 30 days after purchase. Simply send the product back to us in the condition it was received for a new size or store credit.

    Sometimes mistakes happen so if your shirt isn't what you expected let us know and we can send you the right shirt.
