Fun-Gus highlights the belowground ecological interactions that occur between the plants, fungi and grubs.

THE SCIENCE | ADAM FREW

Arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AM fungi) live in the roots of plants and create vast fungal networks. They support plants by helping them access nutrients in the soil and increase their resistance to pests and disease. They also support the soil structure and are important in carbon storage and carbon cycling across the ecosystem.

Adams research aims to better understand AM fungi, their diversity, and how they affect plant growth, nutrient uptake, and their ability to defend themselves against attack from insects. He is also interested in how these interactions are affected by agricultural management and climate change.

THE ART | SANDRA SEVERGNINI

Sandra was drawn to Adams research into AM fungi as she had previously illustrated the award winning ‘Tree Beings’ by Raymond Huber. Through illustrating the book, it ignited her passion in trees and the earth beneath our feet.

Through the design Sandra and Adam wanted to highlight the belowground ecological interactions that occur between the plants, fungi and grubs.

The face within the illustration reflects a humorous human reliance on these belowground relationships, whether we see it at first or not.
