Team Eukaryote celebrates the biomarkers researchers are looking for in sedimentary to identify the earliest life forms, eukaryotes.

Tharika Liyanage works in paleobiogeochemistry (yup it’s a mouthful)! She analyzes rocks for chemical signatures of the earliest life forms, eukaryotes and bacteria. When primitive microorganisms died, they left behind organic molecules which are preserved in the rock record as biomarkers. By looking for these molecules in the rock, the environment and organisms of that time can be determined.

Effie Dee has taken inspiration from the structure of the biomarkers that Tha is searching for, steranes and hopanes, and has layered these structures within a collage of sedimentary rock, where the biomarkers are found.
