Turtle Territory highlights the ecology of long-neck turtles in Northern Australia, illustrating the important relationship between these turtles and Aboriginal communities to maintain a natural cycle.

THE SCIENCE | DR CARLA EISEMBERG

Often when conducting research and studies on ecology, we are left observing animals in their ecosystems, without considering the role that humans play, and have played, in their evolution and regulations in behaviour.

Carla’s research investigates the freshwater, long-necked turtles of Northern Australia who have evolved, over the past 80,000 years, to have humans as their natural predator, to the extent that if the mature adults are not hunted to some extent, there would not be enough food for the juvenile turtles in the ecosystem and the natural cycle would be disrupted.

THE ART | JAMES GIDDY

James has pieced together a design that encapsulates three major points of Carla’s research, who, what and why.

The design looks to a scene of an Aboriginal woman wading through the marshes, looking for the turtles which are estivating under the surface of the mud, this is done using a pole to tap through and detect the shells.

Within the scene there is also the iron heme structure, indicating the importance of iron in the diet of remote communities and the significant iron levels held by the turtles; a solution to the quantity of communities suffering with anaemia.

These moments are framed within the turtle itself, tying the composition and conversation together.
