Worming in Memories visually represents the use of microscopic worms to understand how brain cells communicate during learning and memory formation.

THE SCIENCE | ANNA MCMILLEN

Anna studies learning and memory in the model of Caenorhabditis elegans, a species of microscopic worms. Learning is an organism’s ability to acquire new information about the world around them, and acquire memories so they can store that information to act on later.

The aim of her research is to understand at a cellular level how brain cells known as neurons communicate differently during learning and memory formation.

THE ART | RACHEL ROBERTS

Rachel’s artwork visually represents core elements of Anna’s research – worms, neuronal activity and learning. As in the lab, a blue-green UV light illuminates what’s happening inside the worms through fluorescence. A conscious, awake person (right-hand-side) houses illuminated blue-green worms that are intertwined, indicating that they are learning and gaining memories. An unconscious, sleeping person (left-hand-side) houses colourless worms that lay side-by-side indicating that they are not learning.

Since the translation of Anna’s research may apply to all humans, Rachel intentionally drew human faces that are without gender, age or race. And she amplified this universality by including human skull and skeleton elements. Rachel also added features of other species– dog ears, fish mouths and bird beaks – because Anna’s research may have interspecies implications.
