Gender is a highly contested topic, and many still conflate gender with sex or insist on the existence of a gender binary. In reality, gender, aside from being a social construct, is complex and diverse. Between 0.3% and 4.5% of the Australian adult population identify as transgender and gender-diverse.

Robin’s research has identified that the transgender and gender-diverse population experiences a high level of workplace discrimination and unemployment due to the limited awareness of gender diversity within the work environment.

One aspect of workplace discrimination is misgendering, including the usage of the wrong-gendered vocabulary, titles, or pronouns. Therefore, a balanced approach of gender-neutral and gender-inclusive language at work can increase the inclusion of transgender and gender-diverse employees.
